So ....My first Creativate blog starts with the end of term. One of the perks about being an Art Teacher in Dorset is that we have the wonderful Arts University Bournemouth on our doorstep.
The AUB give back to local teachers with a 'Cake and Make' Day. It's the second time I've been along and again it didn't disappoint!
After a coffee and catch up we made our way to the Drawing Studio. The first purpose built drawing room to be built in Britain for more than 100 years. Designed by AUB alumnus and Honorary Fellow, Professor Sir Peter Cook RA, the CRAB studio offers a space, purely for drawing purposes.
Today we were life drawing. Organised by the wonderful Deano Pickering, Widening Participation Officer at AUB, we were given a whole 3 hours to indulge ourselves in the process of drawing.
There is a space that you step into when drawing. For me, everything else slips away. My mind gets taken up with lines and angles, sweeping curves and subtleties between dark and light. Texture and form and, when life drawing, the feel of the pose.
I tried to challenge myself to try different approaches for each drawing ... pure line, negative space, different mark-making, laying down a ground, drawing in masking tape before graphite, stenciling background shapes, and using a rubber to reveal highlights.
“Drawing makes you see things clearer, and clearer and clearer still, until your eyes ache.” David Hockney
The workshop was run by a great tutor who facilitated the group with a good balance of freedom and guidance. And so we drew and drew. 2 minute poses to 20 minute poses!! I loved every minute and will definitely be back for more if invited!
It's always a great opportunity to catch up with teachers from other schools and touch base with a few familiar faces who teach in different places and spaces.
Many of the students I've taught have gone on to learn at the AUB and I've said goodbye to them in the safe knowledge that they are in very safe hands. AUB offer such a diverse experience of Art and Design and the campus is forever growing and developing to prepare their students for the creative industries that they will some day step into. I always yearn to be back learning when I visit them ... perhaps one day I will !
Thanks AUB! Look forward to the next one !
